Hydraulic Oil Contamination Control: ISO 4406 Cleanliness Guide for Low-Speed High-Torque Piston Motors

Latest company news about Hydraulic Oil Contamination Control: ISO 4406 Cleanliness Guide for Low-Speed High-Torque Piston Motors
Why Oil Cleanliness Decides Piston Motor Life

Low-speed, high-torque (LSHT) radial piston motors such as the Poclain MS/MK and Rexroth MCR series operate at high pressure and low rotational speed, where the running clearance between piston, roller, cam ring and valve plate is measured in microns. Even a thin film of abrasive particles is wide enough to open that clearance, increase internal leakage and shorten the service interval. In practice, most of the prematurely returned hydraulic motors our engineers inspect at the Helm Tower Noda test bench fail because of contaminated oil rather than a manufacturing defect.

Reading an ISO 4406 Cleanliness Code

ISO 4406:2021 reports contamination as three numbers — for example 18/16/13 — representing the particle count (per millilitre) larger than 4 µm, 6 µm and 14 µm. Lower numbers mean cleaner fluid. For LSHT piston motors we recommend the following targets by application.

ApplicationRecommended ISO 4406Max particle >14 µm
New motor commissioning16/14/1180 pcs/mL
Normal continuous operation18/16/13320 pcs/mL
High-pressure / high-duty cycle17/15/12160 pcs/mL
Servo-controlled proportional drives16/14/1180 pcs/mL
Where Contamination Comes From
  • Built-in debris — casting sand, machining swarf and weld spatter left inside tanks, pipes and manifolds after assembly.
  • Ingressed dust — worn breathers, damaged rod seals and poorly sealed reservoir hatches in dusty mining or construction environments.
  • Internal wear particles — metal flakes generated by pumps, cylinders and the motor itself, which then recirculate as an abrasive.
  • Oil degradation — oxidation and varnish from overheating, plus water ingress that promotes corrosion and additive breakdown.
  • Service contamination — dust pushed into the circuit when oil is topped up or filters are changed without clean practice.
A Practical Filtration and Flushing Procedure
  1. Flush every new or repaired circuit with a flushing rig or a dedicated flushing valve before connecting the final motor; aim for a flushing velocity around 2–3 times normal flow.
  2. Fit a return-line filter rated β7(c) ≥ 200 (ISO 16889) and a pressure-line filter of 6–10 µm absolute upstream of critical valves.
  3. Sample oil from a turbulent point in the reservoir 20 minutes after shutdown, never from the drain plug, and test with an ISO 4406 particle counter.
  4. Set a change interval based on sampled trend data rather than on hours alone — many customers safely extend intervals by 30–50% once stable cleanliness is proven.
  5. Store and transfer oil through a dedicated, sealed 10 µm filter cart; never reuse an open drum.
